Give One or All of These Creative Hobbies a Shot

We’ve been dealing with a lot during 2020, from a global pandemic to protests across the country. Needless to say, it’s important to your mental health to unplug and recharge your emotional batteries. Of course, there are plenty of ways to do this, but hobbies that busy your mind are one of the best coping mechanisms out there!

At the beginning of quarantine, people couldn’t get enough of new hobbies—but perhaps, the momentum has slowed down since then, as states slowly reopen their economies. Don’t let that stop you, though, from finding a new hobby or reoccurring activity that you can be passionate about. Not sure where to begin with all the online resources out there? Then, check out The Westport Apartments’ suggestions!

Doing puzzles.

Whether you choose a traditional, Sudoku, crossword, or logic puzzle, all puzzles are a great way to build mental agility. If you don’t have anything lying around the house, you can find them fairly cheap online or at used bookstores. They’re great to do alone or with a partner or roommate, and it beats spending hours on your smartphone, scrolling through the seemingly endless news cycle.

Committing to cross-stitch.

The fabric arts have no shortage of fans. Over quarantine, you might have seen many of your acquaintances trying their hand at knitting, crocheting, or cross-stitching—and with good reason! The repetitious work of cross-stitching allows you to slow down and put yourself into a meditative space, even if temporarily. Instead of your stress, all you have to focus on is counting stitches.

Learning a new language.

Now that you have some extra time on your hands, you can commit to all those items on your
To-Do Bucket List,” like learning a new language. French, Spanish, German, or Mandarin Chinese, the sky is the limit when it comes to making yourself more worldly. Once you choose the method, you can easily find free or inexpensive tools online to help you in your journey.

Starting a bullet journal.

Journaling is always a go-to coping mechanism for many. It gives you a safe place to write down and process all the thoughts currently in your head. If you don’t consider yourself much of a writer, consider starting a bullet journal, an equal parts diary, written meditation, and day planner. With a bullet journal, you can focus on the present & future to align yourself with your goals, both professional and personal.
